Design Dynamics Load Analysis with
and without ROOF HUGGERS
Testing by Farabaugh Testing & Engineering
Test 1 (without ROOF HUGGERS)
Setting up purlins without ROOF HUGGERS.
Purlins lined up ready for roof panels.
26ga.steel roof panels.
Sensors installed for test 1.
Controlled vaccuum pressure test begins.
Purlins buckling at 35.0 psf of vacuum pressure.
Test 2 (WITH ROOF HUGGERS)
Setting up new purlins for test with ROOF HUGGERS.
ROOF HUGGERS installed.
ROOF HUGGERS top flange laps are fastened with two screws.
New roof installed on the ROOF HUGGERS.
Vacuum sensors in place.
Vacuum readings on sensor monitor.
Slight bowing as pressure is increased.
Second failure and structural distress.
Second test failure occurs at 51.2 psf of vacuum pressure.
Conclusion
The conclusion derived from this test is that the ROOF HUGGER method
of cross-tying new-to-existing roofing systems significantly
enhances the stiffness and strength of the existing purlin system.
